From its inception almost 30 years ago, the Foster Grandparent Program has brought older volunteers together with troubled children. In Maryland alone, more than 300 Foster Grandparents work with thousands of children. The Department of Juvenile Services is home to the largest Foster Grandparent Program statewide, with over 70 volunteers working one-on-one with exceptional and delinquent youth.
Currently, our Foster Grandparents volunteer at 22 sites, from community centers in Garrett County and Cambridge, to facilities such as the Charles H. Hickey, Jr. School, William Donald Schaefer House, and the O'Farrell Youth Center. Foster Grandparents provide:
Academic and Skills Tutoring
One-on-One Companionship for Exceptional and Special Youth
A Stable, Non-Judgemental Presence
A Grandparent's Care
As all employees, volunteers and interns with the Department, Foster Grandparents are required to undergo a background investigation before they begin working with youth. Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend and work 20 hours per week. Meals are provided at most host sites and transportation is provided to all Foster Grandparents.
The Department also has a non-stipend Foster Grandparents' Program for older citizens whose income is too high to qualify them for a stipend. All Foster Grandparents participate in the same volunteer activities, attend training together and are recognized at an annual recognition.
