The problems of troubled youth are complex. But we must never lose hope. We can't solve every social ill or heal every child, but we can provide each youth with alternatives . . . tools to help change a life - a new job skill, greater self-respect, alternatives to drugs, a positive role model or supportive friendship.
We can't solve these problems alone. Here are a few ways you can help:
The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services offers many opportunities for people from the community to give their time and talents for the benefit of our youth. Students can earn course credits, and all individuals can add to their professional experience and give back to the community through volunteering or student internships. Interns and volunteers are able to work in a variety of settings with youth in the community or a facility monitored by an employee, or under the direct supervision of a DJS professional in one of our offices. A new College Campus Mentoring Program offers college organizations, fraternities and sororities the opportunity to mentor DJS youth right on their college campus for weekly academic support, personal enrichment, and social activities.
