The 15-week Institute, sponsored by the Professional Development and Training Unit, began its 2008 session on March 6 and has already traveled to four locations throughout the state with plans to visit each of the six DJS Regions.
The fourteen participants have organized themselves into three community service project teams. Each team has committed to providing 60-120 community service hours per project. Our future DJS leaders are striving to render significant contributions across our state and seeking your support.
The three community service projects and potential areas for contribution are outlined below:
Team 1: G.E.M. (Girls Emerging into Maturity) is committed to informing, empowering, impacting and embracing young girls between the ages of 13-18 who are pending placement residents at the Regional Institute of Child Adolescence (RICA) Center. G.E.M. is dedicated to providing career guidance and informing these young ladies about the dangers of substance abuse. The team's goals are to provide alternatives and support informed decision making regarding life, problems and stressors.
Team 2: L.I.F.E.R.S. (Leaders Influence, Facilitate, Encourage, Respect and Solve) has joined forces with the Frederick County Relay for Life. The team will conduct fundraising efforts and participate in the overnight relay to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS). The team's goals are to support ACS by heightening cancer awareness; promoting a healthy active lifestyle; and donating time, money and human resources. L.I.F.E.R.S. is endeavoring to partner with community volunteers, sponsors and fellow DJS employees in the Frederick County Relay for Life on May 16-17.
Team 3: M.O.V.E. (Motivating Others to Volunteer Emphatically) is requesting your support and participation in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Walks on April 12-13 in Cambridge, Hagerstown and Towson, Maryland. M.O.V.E.'s mission is to raise money and increase awareness of MS while supporting the pursuit of increased mobility for those affected by the disease. The goals of Team M.O.V.E. are to increase funding for research, reach out to those directly and indirectly affected by MS and augment DJS' visibility in the community through a strong employee representation during the Walks.
Anyone can participate in these worthwhile outreaches by running, walking, assisting at the sites or making a donation!!!
